Student Workshop Respect: Why Does It Matter? is designed to help teachers assist students in exploring the meaning of respect in today’s world and what it means to them. Storylines drawn from teenage life provide the vehicle: a teen is rejected because she consistently ignores and devalues the ideas of others; another makes fun of a classmate’s stuttering; another gets a speeding ticket and thinks it’s no big deal until the judge demands she come back to court in a week and explain why respect for the law is important. And so it goes, with each teen fi nding himself or herself in a situation that challenges them to rethink their notions or what is okay and what is not okay.

This program is designed to help teenagers grasp the notion that respect begins with each person, and that when you respect yourself, you are more likely to respect others. Respecting others in turn feeds back to each person, as the respect bestowed on others is returned.
